What type of filter should I use in my home?
A whole-house air cleaner offers more air filtration than standard air filters. We can install a passive air cleaner to help eliminate airborne pollutants. If using store bought replacement filters we recommend the pleated type. These filters will need to be changed approximately every three months. The cheaper non-pleated filters should be changed every 30 days.
What temperature should I set my thermostat on during the summer and winter?
We always tell people to set them where they are comfortable, but remember the lower the setting in the summer the more energy consumption. The opposite is also true for the winter – the higher the temperature setting, the more energy consumption. A good summer time setting is 78 degrees, and a good winter setting is 68 degrees.
How often should I have maintenance on my HVAC system?
Manufactures recommend twice a year, and we at Yellow Dot agree with this recommendation. The spring and the fall are great times to have this done. Call and inquire about our maintenance agreements and the money you can save by having your HVAC system serviced by Yellow Dot!
Some manufacturers require annual maintenance to extend warranty coverage
What is SEER, and what does it mean for the consumer?
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) is how air conditioners and heat pumps are rated for their efficiency. The minimum standard now is 13 SEER, but some manufacturers have achieved over 19 SEER with several of their flagship products. Remember the higher the SEER the less energy the unit will use, saving you the consumer money!
14 SEER and over 20 SEER
What is IAQ?
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is used in a variety of discussions in homes and businesses. In recent years some health issues have been linked to poor indoor air quality. If you are considering making improvements to your indoor air quality, there are some steps that can be taken. Having your duct system sealed to prevent infiltration of unhealthy air or adding an electronic air cleaner to your HVAC system can boost the quality of air you are breathing in your home. Also, adding a UV light can kill airborne bacteria and viruses in your HVAC system; and introducing filtered outside air to your home or business can replace stale air and reduce those embarrassing odors. Give us a call today to discuss your needs and options!
Should I purchase an extended warranty for my new HVAC system?
High tech components can break down on newer equipment, so for peace of mind and overall satisfaction we always recommend this option.
Why does the ductwork in my crawl space sweat during the summer?
This is a very common occurrence here in the Triangle. When the temperature and humidity are high (circumstances that are prominent during our summers) that hot moist air is present in your crawl space. When your air conditioner is running it produces air at a low temperature. This cool air inside the ductwork causes the exterior of the duct to reach its dew point. Once this happens, the humidity in the air condenses on the cooler ductwork causing the sweating. This is normal for our region.
Can I benefit from having a humidifier installed on my HVAC system to raise the humidity level in my house during the winter?
You can but the majority of humidifiers in the market today have a limited run-time based on the operation of the furnace. In other words it works only when the furnace is running, and this can limit humidity production. For the best results, we recommend the Honeywell TrueSTEAM™ humidifier. These humidifiers can raise humidity levels in the house regardless of whether the system is running. Call us today and have one of our professional show you how this system can benefit your entire household.

How can I find carbon monoxide in my home?
The best method of detection is to use a carbon monoxide detector in a central location of your home. A carbon monoxide detector is a device very similar to a smoke alarm and it will monitor the air for carbon monoxide and emits an alarm if a specific level is detected. Ideally, you should have at least one detector adjacent to every living area, centrally located, or on each floor in your home. Give us a call today to purchase a carbon monoxide detector or have one of our certified technicians to install in your home.
How can I eliminate indoor home odors?
You may have tried to cover up indoor odors by spraying air fresheners or lighting candles. Unfortunately, these tactics only mask the odors; they don't get rid of them. These remedies may in fact negatively affect indoor air quality from chemicals that cause allergic reactions or eye irritation for homeowners.
Bacteria, dust mites, animal dander and cat saliva may also be roots of your home's odor problem. Sometimes poor ventilation contributes to unpleasant odors. Moisture condensation on walls windows and stagnate air are signs of poor ventilation. One of our qualified technicians can inspect your home comfort system to determine if this is an issue that should be addressed. The technician can also inform you how to solve the ventilation system’s ability to correctly circulate and ventilate indoor air.
